A good scare can be part of the fun on Halloween. For kids, it’s most likely due to the spirit of the season or that one neighbor whose decorations are always a little over-the-top. For parents, though, the fear may be over concerns that their children will receive treats tainted with pins, razor blades, or worse while they’re canvassing the neighborhood in costume. Velocity Urgent Care is offering to scan candy using their x-ray machines in the hope of giving parents peace of mind and ensuring that the worst thing in the trick-or-treat bags is too much sugar. Velocity is offering this free service at five locations between 2 and 8 pm on Halloween and the day after, with no appointment needed. In promoting the program, the operators are quick to note their normal hours of operation, and that there’s typically a minimal wait for walk-in care for a wide variety of complaints. In doing so, they’re providing a legitimate community service, creating goodwill, and conducting subtle education among area residents who may not have visited a Velocity Urgent Care location before (or maybe haven’t been to an urgent care center at all).
