UCA Webinar: Why Acute Flaccid Myelitis Should Be on Your Radar Now

While the world’s attention has been focused on COVID-19, another mysterious virus has continued to wreak havoc on the families it affects. Acute flaccid myelitis, which has been afflicting a growing number of children for several years, has continued to strike seemingly out of the blue. While care for children diagnosed with AFM is clearly beyond the resources of an urgent care center, parents could easily present to urgent care when symptoms first start to appear, or bring their already-diagnosed child to an urgent care center with unrelated complaints. This has not been a topic that urgent care providers have needed to address for the most part—but that’s likely to change as AFM persists. The Urgent Care Association, in association with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, will address those educational needs in a live webinar, Acute Flaccid Myelitis: Are We in for Another Peak Year? What Urgent Care Clinicians Need to Know, on Tuesday, July 14 at 1 pm, Central. Presenters Janell Routh, MD, MHS and Thomas Tryon, MD will join moderator Joseph Toscano, MD in reviewing what we know about AFM in the U.S., clinical presentation and initial evaluation of patients with AFM, and what the diagnostic work-up entails so urgent care providers are better equipped to recognize AFM rapidly and help families start down the road to the right care as soon as possible.
