Looking comprehensively at the ongoing announcements from CVS, it becomes clear that the healthcare giant is recasting its retail pharmacy and in-store clinic strategy. With the recent announcement that CVS is shutting down all of its MinuteClinics in Utah this month, the company’s clinic closures are rapidly adding up—with more closures expected by February 2025. In terms of retail operations overall, CVS pledged to whittle away approximately 300 store locations per year, adding up to as many as 900 shuttered stores by the end of 2024.
Closures heavier on the clinic side: “As recently as May, 2023, we’ve seen CVS operating as many as 1,150 MinuteClinic locations,” says Alan Ayers, President of Urgent Care Consultants and Senior Editor of JUCM. “As of December 2024, there are 875 remaining locations, which is a 23% reduction. Although CVS has announced closure of 10% of its 9,000 pharmacies, or 300 store closures per year, the percentage of stores with a MinuteClinic has fallen 18.5% since 2023, indicating MinuteClinic closures are outpacing total store closures for the company.”
