Diagnosis: The x-ray reveals a sclerotic bone lesion (arrow). Such a lesion generally represents a more slow-growing insult to bone, whereby the bone has had a chance to react and reorganize. Lytic bone lesions, in contrast, are more acute reactions.
The differential diagnosis of sclerotic bone lesions is represented by the acronym “VINDICATE”:
- Vascular
- Infection
- Neoplasm
- Drugs (Vitamin D, fluoride)
- Inflammatory/idiopathic
- Congenital
- Autoimmune
- Trauma
- Endocrine/metabolic
