One Medical, under the Amazon umbrella since February 2023, is now facing a lawsuit related to the death of a patient who was treated virtually by a One Medical provider. The 45-year-old patient complained of shortness of breath, coughing up blood, and feet turning blue, according to reporting in the Washington Post. He was prescribed an inhaler during the virtual appointment and later died waiting to be seen at a local hospital emergency department in Oakland, California. The family of the patient outlined in the suit that the patient had a severe bacterial and viral illness as well as diabetes and chronic kidney disease, and they believe he didn’t receive appropriate care from One Medical.

Courts to decide: It’s not unusual for providers to face malpractice accusations, however, this case is the first wrongful death lawsuit filed against One Medical. And the Post has been following One Medical closely, reporting in June that leaked documents showed the virtual care organization routes patients to a call center that is staffed in part by contractors with limited training. Amazon swears by the quality of One Medical, saying in a statement to the media outlet that the organization refutes the claims in the wrongful death case.
