Almost half a million Americans who currently do not have health insurance have signed up for a new 2025 health plan through the federal Health Insurance Marketplace so far, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services reports. To put the numbers in context, about 8.2% of Americans (27 million people) were uninsured this year, compared to 16% in 2010, according to federal data. And there are still a few weeks left in open enrollment. The nation’s 19 separate state-based marketplaces are also reporting approximately 507,000 enrollments are complete for next year, and an additional 2.5 million people who already have federal marketplace coverage have renewed their enrollment for 2025.

Early innings: Open enrollment continues through January 15, although enrollees must sign up and pay their first premium in early December to activate coverage for January. Many marketplace plans offer coverage for urgent care visits.
