A new at-home urgent care (UC) provider, Urgent Care On The Go, launched in late December 2024 in half a dozen cities in southern Louisiana, offering mobile urgent care as well as a brick-and-mortar wellness center in Opelousas, Louisiana. For a single fee of $199 per visit, members can access treatment for acute illnesses and injuries as well as lab tests and other services. Some services, such as IV infusions for medically diagnosed conditions, are delivered at the wellness center. Urgent Care On The Go also offers a weight loss program with weight-management injectable drugs.
With some caution: Alan A. Ayers, MBA, MAcc, President of Urgent Care Consultants and Senior Editor of JUCM, notes that models like this may have some niche appeal, however, he cautions that efficiency could be a challenge. “The nurse practitioner is the scarce resource in this case, and by going room to room in an urgent care setting, they can see and bill for 3-4 patients per hour. Meanwhile, the most efficient mobile UC operation can only see perhaps 1 patient per hour, due to time allocated for driving, set-up, tear down, etc.,” he says. Also, the additional cost of operating the vehicle could scrub away at some of the overhead gains of mobile care vs the cost of renting clinic space. The market may determine the future success of mobile UC. Read more about mobile UC from the JUCM archive: Thinking Outside the Box to Bring Urgent Care to the Patient
