Colorado Bill Would Force Freestanding ERs to Be More Open on Costs

Colorado is considering legislation that would require freestanding emergency rooms to post notices throughout the building alerting patients that they have stepped into an emergency room, where they will be afforded emergency care for emergent medical conditions (and pay emergency-level charges). FDA Wants Some Gloves to Take a Powder

The Food and Drug Administration wants to ban most powdered gloves from exam rooms, as well as operating rooms. The ban would apply to powdered surgeon’s gloves, powdered patient examination gloves, and absorbable powder for lubricating a surgeon’s glove. The FDA says the risk that synthetic proteins in the gloves can cause airway inflammation, wound inflammation, and postprocedure adhesions is too great to allow their continued use. West Virginia Moving Toward Prescribing Authority for APRNs

The West Virginia House of Delegates has approved a bill that would give advanced practice registered nurses more authority to treat patients and prescribe medications without a physician’s supervision. If the state senate also passes the “Nurse Practitioners Bill,” West Virginia will become the 22nd state allowing nurse practitioners to do so. Balance Billing Takes a Hit in Tallahassee

The Florida legislature’s House Insurance & Banking Subcommittee has put its stamp of approval on a proposal to protect patients from surprise charges after discharge from the emergency room. As written, the bill would make insurers pay for emergency services and include an arbitration process to resolve differences between insurers and healthcare providers; patients themselves would be removed from that process. ACA Is Officially Repealed—Temporarily

After months of legislative back-and-forth, and as we previewed here last month, the US House of Representatives has passed new legislation that essentially repeals the Affordable Care Act (ACA, or “Obamacare”). Tricare Urgent Care Pilot Now in Obama’s Hands

The “ayes” had it as Congress approved a three-year pilot program that waives preauthorization for Tricare beneficiaries who want to visit an urgent care center. Tricare provides civilian health benefits for military personnel, military retirees, and their dependents.
